5 Signs Your Retaining Wall Needs Repair

Retaining walls do more than define your landscape—they hold back soil, manage stormwater, and protect foundations. In Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties, freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rainfall put constant pressure on masonry structures.

1. Visible bowing or leaning

If the wall is tilting outward or developing a curve, lateral soil pressure may be exceeding the wall’s design capacity. This often worsens after wet seasons.

2. Cracks wider than a quarter inch

Hairline cracks are common, but widening gaps signal movement. Stair-step cracks in brick or block walls deserve immediate attention.

3. Water pooling behind the wall

Poor drainage is the leading cause of retaining wall failure. Saturated soil weighs significantly more and pushes harder against the structure.

4. Stones or blocks shifting out of place

Displaced units mean the wall is losing integrity. Re-leveling without addressing drainage rarely solves the underlying issue.

5. Erosion at the base

Soil washing away at the footer undermines support. Combined with insufficient footing depth, this can cause sudden failure.

Deal Construction inspects retaining walls throughout Northern NJ and provides honest repair or rebuild recommendations. Early intervention saves thousands compared to emergency replacement.
