Hydrostatic pressure explained
When water collects behind a wall with no escape route, pressure builds rapidly. Even a well-built CMU or natural stone wall can bow or collapse under saturated clay common in Northern NJ.
Essential drainage components
- Perforated drain pipe at the footing level.
- Clean gravel backfill for water migration.
- Geotextile fabric to prevent soil clogging.
- Weep holes or outlet pipes at regular intervals.
Compaction and backfill
Layered compaction during backfill prevents future settling that can tilt capstones and create gaps. Skipping this step is a frequent cause of premature failure.
